Youth is Wasted on the Young

I remember the first time I heard that quote.  I was 17 and my grandmother said it to me.

I thought she was nuts.  What the hell did that mean, "youth is wasted on the young"?

Crazy lady.

Well, now that I have seen HSM 3, I totally understand.

I sat for 2 hours watching those hard, tight, stretch mark free bodies sing their way through senior year with the biggest crisis being whether to go to Stanford early or finish senior year.

Don't get me wrong, it's really entertaining.  Come to think of it, my life was one big musical number at 17.  Would I drive my cute self down to Malibu in the Mustang convertible?  Or, would I head on down to Melrose and go shopping with friends?  Decisions.

Sitting in that theatre, watching them frolic in the rain, I felt like youth was punching me in the face.  Repeatedly.

Having your whole life ahead of you.  And, all the energy, enthusiasm to make it all happen.

No need for  Prozac, Botox or Biofreeze.

Now, y'all know I love my life. In the scheme of things,  I am young.   I am incredibly blessed, yada, yada, yada... just let me vent for a minute.

My son is closer to being 17 than I am.

How can this be?

Will I think his friends are hot?  Cause I do think Zack Efron is pretty darn cute....did you see the preview for his next movie?  Hello.

There is just that youthful freshness that is gone after 30.  Not that you don't trade it for a comfort in who you are, life experience and deep, meaningful relationships, right?

Right.

HSM 3 huh? I have a feeling that is where I'll be friday night. I owe my littlest sister who just turned 12, a movie. And she has been DYING to see it!

It sucks getting old but I wouldn't redo high school and my 20's for a million dollars.
Darn it! I was hoping that youthful freshness was gone after 40, and that I had a few years left! Sigh.

For me, HSM was nothing like my high school experience. (Not that you are saying you sang and danced through school, I understand.) Like Susie, I wouldn't go back for a million dollars or Zac Efron.

Right. And I think Zac is a cutie too. I wonder if he realizes how many moms think he's hot...? It's a little weird, no?

I so know what you mean. We have a college student who watches the kids while I work. It seem like just yesterday I was the babysitter but now I am the mom with all the kids and the mini-van. When the heck did that happen?

Reminds me of those sunscreen lyrics...

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.
But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really looked….You’re not as fat as you
imagine.

Okay your post got me singing in my head...

"We had joy we had fun,
We had seasons in the sun."

You're probably too YOUNG to remember that one!

LOL

So that just reminds me of that song by Mixed Bizness, Ooh La La. "I wish I knew what I knew now, when I was younger...." Yes, I do.

Well this post hit home since today is my birthday...and getting older is a mixed bag. Parts of it awesome..and parts not so hot. I wish we could pick and choose the parts lol. Have a great night!

Great post. Here via BATW.

I don't think I could sit thru HSM3but I heard it was pretty entertaining. Turning 31 here a few months and while I know its not old, its older to me. What happened to 17 or even 21?

My dad always told me that people don't trust anyone under 30. For some reason.

I couldn't wait to turn 30.

word.

I so agree with Susie. I wouldn't want to go back and redo HS or my 20s for anything! Wait...maybe a little more vitamin E and cocoa butter on my tummy during my 1st pregnancy!

I sure do love being in my thirties. But I loved the body I had in my early twenties. It's a bummer it has to work that way. Can you imagine the power we would have with a thirty year old brain in a 17 year old body? We would rule the world!

I just had deja vu...

you totally still look youthfully fresh by the way.

Shoot, I think his friends are hot NOW!!

ahem.

Did I just make things weird?

I HAVE YET TO SEE HSM3, BUT I CAN ONLY IMAGINE...AT LEAST IN GREASE II WE KNEW MICHELLE PFEIFER (SP) WAS OLDER THAN THE GIRL SHE WAS PORTRAYING...ALTHOUGH, COME TO THINK OF IT, I WAS STILL ENVIOUS OF HER LOOKS WHEN I WAS 16...THERE GOES THAT THEORY!

I kind of want to lick him. Have you seen his abs? Thank God he's 21 now...and legal.

Wait, seriously...did I just say that? As if I don't have a hot husband.

Our meaningful relationship will be youthfully refreshed very soon. Very. Soon. I need it to be. I'm counting on it. For real.

OKAY, I JUST READ YOUR "MASTER BATES" POST FROM THE SIDE BAR, AND I AM GOING TO WET MY PANTS. THAT IS SOOOOO FUNNY! AND, UNLIKE 12 YEAR OLD BOYS, I DON'T THINK FART OR BUTT JOKES ARE FUNNY AT ALL. I'M ALL FOR BEING PROUD OF YOUR NAME, BUT IN THIS SITUATION I THINK I'D HAVE TO HOLD MY HEAD UP HIGH, WALK TALL AND PROUD, AND ANSWER TO "MR. B."...

Okay, I think you have some issues. You and Jennifer P. Both need some help in the men section. You both go for feminine men! What is up with that? HEE HEE (I hope Jennifer reads your comments, cause I so love rubbing this in on her)

Do you really like the HSM? My MIL loves them and my daughter love them. I can't stomach the music. Greece was so much better with the music, although the acting was still very cheesy.

Course the scariest thought it that my son is only 4 years younger than my husband. Maybe I'm the one with the issues.

Youthful fresshness v's grey hairs and sags.....Yeah,, riiight....

For the record, I was at HSM cause The Boy wanted to see it...

Wheres My Angels: When you see the abs, you'll eat your words. Seriously.

I loved being 17. I know, I know, I wasn't supposed to, but I did. Honestly, I kind of had the self assurance and smarts of a 30 year old. I had a really good time, and have no regrets. I wouldn't go back, but sometimes it sure is nice to reminisce.

And, what's up with Viagra guy?

Sure, you'll think his friends are cute. As long as it's a looky-no touchy kind of thing, it's fine. Although, I never think my little sister's boyfriends are cute.

When I am at my happiest - which for me means - feeling fit & healthy, having my hubby & son with me in heart & soul, having a healthy balance of all things, and knowing I am doing what I can ecah day to be good - then I feel I have best of both worlds. I feel the freedom & energy those kids do but I feel luckier because it's also coupled with wisdom, confidence & true relationships that I know will last the rest of my life. They don't have that yet, ya know?
KimmyJ said…
Feeling old and haggard at the moment - I better skip HSM if it will exaggerate the feeling!

P.S. But on days like this when I am feeling the extra 8 lbs on my butt, although everything else is great, going back to that time doesn't seem so bad. Hah. But without Zac. His eyebrows are too pretty :)

One of the things I told my girls on the way home after the movie, was that guys in high school are not that nice all the time. It's a fantasy we all hope for as pre-teens, but reality is high school is more work than what tv shows and movies portray.

my little girls are dreaming of HSM3, but let's see how highschool will be by the time they get there.

I was thinking the same thing about the Viagra guy...

Where did he come from? I kept waiting for the punch line, but it never (came).

Oh, wait, I just made my own punch line.

Ha, ha.

I so hear you on this! Just turned 30 this year and I already feel different plus I am noticing more and more lines {wrinkles} under my eyes! YIKES! Well, at least we have each other for support!!

Did Lula really say she wanted to like Zach Efron?

My kids is 17 in less than six months, BIG sigh.

I am happy where I am now! But I wouldn't mind my 20 year old body.
Sydney said…
Haven't seen any of the HSM movies (my kid's only 3, so I think that ship will have sailed by the time he's a little bit older... well. hopefully.) but I have to say I don't get the Zac Efron thing. Every picture of him I've seen he looks like a girl. He's too pretty.
That must be a sign that I'm getting old I guess. - sigh-

I think I'm going to have a mental breakdown when I turn 30. :(

I am so glad I don't have to sit through that HSM stuff...I don't need any more reminders about how ancient I am!

Yeah, being a grown up kinda totally sucks sometimes. I don't like responsibility much. I was an awesome teenager.

My daughter who is in 8th grade did some running with the high school cross country team this summer. The senior boys were running without shirts on and let's just say I had a Mrs. Robinson moment! :)

I haven't see HSM3 and I really don't want to...although I'm sure I'll see it at some point.

Luckily my boys aren't very into it.

We saw the Beverly Hills Chihuahua movie this weekend, cute, but corny. We laughed a lot though.
I have avoided this movie at all costs. My 8 years claims not to like HSM-- I can't pinpoint why. Her brothers hate it, so I'm thinking she just wants to be like them? My 14 year old is going Friday with his gal pal. It's her birthday and she REALLY wants to go. He honestly told her "I'll go for you, but I won't like it". BAHAHAHAHAHA
